Functional Capacity Evaluations (FCE) are a systematic, comprehensive process of assessing an individual's physical capacities and functional abilities. This program matches a person's performance levels to the demands of a specific job or work/sport activity or occupation. The FCE establishes the physical level of work/activity an individual can perform. It is useful in determining job placement, job accommodation or return to work/activity after an injury or illness. FCE can provide objective information to determine an individual's "Residual Functional Capacity." Residual Functional Capacity is what an individual can do despite the limitation of the individual's impairment. The FCE gives everyone involved a concise, unbiased report regarding functional work ability in determination of occupational disability status.
The Functional Capacity Evaluations may be used:
- To determine the individual's ability to safely return to work full time on limited duty
- To determine if work restrictions, job modifications or reasonable accommodations are necessary to prevent further injury
- To determine the extent to which impairments exist, or the degree of physical disability for compensation purposes
- To predict the potential ability to perform work following rehabilitation or a work conditioning program
