ServicesLymphedema Services

Lymphedema is a swelling in any area of the body, most often an arm or leg, where the lymphatic system is compromised. The lymphatic system is part of the body's circulator system. It consists primarily of lymph vessels and nodes. The lymphatic systems role is to remove bacteria, waste products and excess proteins from the tissues and to product disease fighting cells for the immune system.

Lymphedema may occur following a recent medical procedure or condition or many years later. Lymphedema can not be cured, but it can be significantly reduced and controlled with therapy and self-management. Early intervention is critical to effectively manage lymphedema. If left untreated, lymphedema increases the risk for infection leading to more complicated medical conditions. In addition, the persistent swelling can cause pain, decreased range of motion and limitations in performing daily activities.

There are two types of lymphedema which are named primary and secondary. Primary lymphedema can be congenital or may develop at any time for unknown reasons. Secondary lymphedema is more common and can be caused by:
  • Surgery, especially when lymph nodes are removed for treatment of cancer (i.e. breast, prostate). Other surgical procedures, including joint replacement and repair, may also disrupt the normal flow of lymph fluid and cause abnormal swelling (swelling that does not resolve six weeks post surgery)
  • Radiation therapy can cause scarring of lymph nodes and vessels, which interrupts the normal flow of the lymph fluid.
  • Trauma such as crushing injuries, amputations and fractures, disrupt the normal flow of lymph fluid, especially if they occur near major lymph node groups.
  • Chronic venous insufficiency (due to impaired cardiac or renal function) may result in excess fluid primarily in legs that impairs the lymphatic system.
  • Paralysis - Immobility makes it difficult for the lymphatic system to function properly.

Symptoms of Lymphedema:
  • A feeling of fullness or pressure - this can be the first sign of swelling
  • Swelling that increases the size of an arm, leg, or any other body part (i.e. breast, trunk) In addition; you may experience the following symptoms in a swollen area.
  • Changes in skin tension - the swollen area progresses from being soft and puffy to thick, firm and hard
  • Change in skin color from neutral to red
  • Pain or aching
  • Feeling of heaviness or tightness
  • Feeling of increased warmth
  • Decreased range of motion
  • Increased difficulty performing daily activities

Freedom Physical Therapy Services provides a comprehensive evaluation to determine the appropriate, individualized course of treatment.
